Cable layers work outside in all weather conditions, so it is important to be physically fit, healthy and resilient. Depending on the area of specialism, you could be laying telephone and internet cables or working with electrical cables. Because of the nature of working with electricity, this can be a dangerous job so it is essential that candidates are responsible, methodical, committed to health and safety and do not take unnecessary risks. The work can be isolated, repairing broken cables in the middle of the night, or can involve going into people’s houses so good communication skills are important. Good problem solving and practical skills are essential, as is the ability to work under pressure. A full driving licence is usually required and for some jobs you will need to be NRSWA (New Roads and Street Work) registered.
